Franklin Alexander Slater was born on September 3, 1940 on Greenwood Farm in Aquasco, Maryland to the late William Ernest Slater and Helen Berdina Holland. The third of six siblings, he was affectionately referred to as Franky. Franky received his early education in the Prince Georges County Public School System. On February 20, 1958, Franky was united in marriage to the love of his life Doris R. Young. Four children were born to this union -- one son, Calvin and three daughters, Deborah, Phyllis, and Rhonda. February marked 60 years of marriage for Franky and Doris. Franky was a dedicated worker who enjoyed the respect of those with whom we worked. First employed at a variety of construction sites, he later spent over 30 years with the Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) until retirement. After about a year of retirement, Franky realized that he liked to stay busy. This led him to Brandywine Auto Parts, a job he worked for 19 years. Franky was a lifelong member of the Aquasco community and was a member of the former St. Thomas Methodist Church now known as Christ United Methodist Church and was always willing to lend his support when needed. Anyone who knew Franky knew that he had a deep passion for drag racing. When he was young, he began racing at the Aquasco Speedway, the first quarter-mile dragstrip on the United States East Coast. When Franky was not working, he was racing or somewhere around racing. To his great joy, Franky’s passion was shared by his son Calvin and his oldest grandson and sidekick Delante, who was sixteen when he started racing. Along with Calvin and Delante, Frank’s pit crew included his nephew Gregg Holland, Joe Scott, and Justin Buckler. Working on Franky’s crew, you quickly learned he was just as serious about his tools as he was his cars. If you borrowed it, you returned it. If it was dirty you cleaned it (because that is how you found it). Frank’s love for racing extended to the Quartermasters Racing Team, a community organization of drag racing enthusiasts. As treasurer, Franky helped the Quatermasters sponsor outreach initiatives to support the community. A devoted family man, Franky loved spending time with his family, traveling with them on family cruises; visiting his brother in various states; and carrying his daughters and friends on yearly shopping trips in his RV. Franky also loved his pets. Every morning, he took great care to make sure his cats were fed. During his visits to Delante’s house, he enjoyed playing with his grandson” a.k.a. Teddy the dog. Franky always had lots of wisdom to share with his children. He would often say, “Work hard for what you want. Take care of yourself and be independent.” Although he was direct and to the point, deep down he had a heart of gold. He loved to wear his white cap and never left without his suspenders, whether in work clothes or his dress attire. On March 6, 2018, Franky departed this life at his home in Aquasco, Maryland. He is survived by his wife Doris and his children Calvin; Deborah (Tony) Proctor; Phyllis Slater; Rhonda (Lamar); and Joyce (Karl) Barnes. His foster children Kim, Pam, Will and Michelle Williams also mourn his loss. He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings - Henrietta; Clinton (Helen); Paul; and William (Penny); his brothers- and sisters in-law James “Buck” (Elsie); Russell; Elsie and Ann. Franky’s grandchildren also cherish his memory - Delante (Tammira); Dwayne; Tony (Carmen); Steven (Jody); Anthony (Marquita); Dawnnita, Carla, Briana, Briana, Takyra, Akilah and Angel. Franky is also mourned by twenty great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Franky was preceded in death by his sisters Dorothy and Frances and his brother Kenneth. Visitation will be held on Friday March 16, 2018 from 9-11 a.m. with Homegoing Service at 11:00 a.m. at UNION BETHEL AME CHURCH, 6810 Floral Park Road Brandywine, MD 20613. Interment St Thomas Cemetery 18810 Aquasco Rd Brandywine, MD.
