The dream of being a competitive race car driver has been with Isaiah Black since he was in diapers.

As a young child, Isaiah — now 14 — would make cars out of LEGO blocks his parents bought him. By grade school, he was already designing race cars for class projects.

The Upper Marlboro teenager's dream of being a race car driver took another leap after joining the Save Our Youth/Racing 4 Life drag racing team, a Fort Washington-based nonprofit organization that is designed to engage youth through competitive racing and celebrates its one-year anniversary this month. Black joined the group in March after his mother met the group's founders.

On the weekends, Isaiah now spends his time with the racing team checking out competitive races around the state and getting close-up lessons on drag cars, with the hope of eventually being able to race competitively at local raceways.

"I've always wanted to be a racer, so this is a really good experience," Isaiah said. "Being a part of Save Our Youth has really helped me open up and learn more things about racing."

Tapping into the popularity of illegal street car racing in Southern Maryland, the group's founder, Douglas Roeser of Fort Washington said he hopes to provide young people — in particular the area's black youth — with a safe, legal option to street car racing. Trips include drag races at tracks like the Maryland International Raceway in St. Mary's County. (Click Here To Read the Full Story)
