Drag Racing Stories

Angel Lofty Representing the "Sisters" at MIR
(Story Submitted by Angel Lofty and Edited by QMB)

I started racing in 2000. I went to my first "midnight madness" race at MIR with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) and his dad. I wasn’t getting enough attention from him so, I asked him to give me the keys to your truck (90 Nissan pickup). I figured I would get his attention one way or another and that I did. I started running " midnight madness" every Friday - winning (3) round robin trophies and (4) "Queen of the Creek" trophies. I decided in 2004 to competite in  the ET series @ MIR in my 2001 Monte Carlo which ran 16's all day long, until I tore up the trans (more than once). At that point my hubby and father-in-law said that they would build me a car. So they built me a 83 Monte Carlo 350 for competition in the 2005 race season. I started out running in the low 15’s. (It had a throttle stop on it; until I was comfortable in the car). By the end of that race season I was running 13.30 and I finished 25th in the points series. In 2006, I was running in the upper 12's and finished 19th in the ET series making me eligible to represent MIR at Bracket Finals in which we won 1st place!!! In 2007 my husband did some modifications to the car and I ran in the high 11's finishing the ET series that year in 24th place. In 2007, I also tried out for the "Pinks All Out" at MIR. I am one of the only female racers and the ONLY African American Female there that weekend. A 10 second class was chosen to compete that evening. In the 2008 ET series I was running mid 11's and finished 11th in the Modified ET class once again representing MIR at the Bracket Finals in Rockingham, NC where we finished 4th. I am the ONLY African American Female Racer at MIR. I am very proud to hold that title. This upcoming 2009 race season I will be taking a back seat until September; as I am expecting my first baby which is due in July. But look out; because I will be back doing what comes natural, racing my 1983 Monte Carlo 350 down the Quarter Mile. See ya soon.

(QMB would like to thank Angel for sharing her story with our readers.)
